How To Dress the Hourglass Body

Updated: Oct 20, 2021

What is the Hourglass body?

One of the most desired body types is the hourglass body. You have an hourglass body type if your waist is well contrasted by your shoulders and hips. The hourglass figure is smallest at the waist and has more prominent curves due to larger shoulders and hips. The hourglass body has a full bust and a curvy silhouette. The ratio of your bust, waist, and hips is 4:3:4.

How To Dress If You Are An Hourglass Body Shape

As an hourglass, one of the best assets is your defined waist. Since you have a very ladylike and curvy figure, the hourglass shape is very desirable, yet sometimes when it comes to clothing styles it might be a little challenging! If you don’t know how to dress according to your shape, you might find yourself looking a bit blockish. So let’s discuss how you can best compliment your body through clothes.

Tops and Neckline

For tops, you want to show off your slim waist and neckline. Some flattering necklines include V-neck, sweetheart and round neck. Avoid wearing oversized tops or anything that adds volume to your bust area such as ruffles because this will make you look ‘top heavy’ or bulky. Wearing a boatneck or turtleneck will also make the area around the bust appear larger. Well fitted tops on the hourglass body will look great such as wrap tops or tops that hug your figure.

Dresses

Dresses are an hourglass’ best friend as they can really flatter your natural curves. Body con and bias cut dresses are great for accentuating your smaller waist and larger bust. For more modest or formal occasions, fitted sheath, wrap and paneled waist dresses are great as they still highlight your natural figure while looking professional. Which dresses to avoid? Dresses that are too boxy or have too much fabric on the top might make you look bigger.

Skirts

Look for high-waisted skirts that fit well on the hips such as pencil and bias skirts. You could also go for ones that flare out at the bottom like A-line and full skirts, this adds volume to your lower body and further highlights your small waist.

Pants and Jeans

High waist pants are a flattering choice for your body as they compliment your slim waist. Generally, pants that go straight down like wide-leg pants are flattering options for your body. Bootcut and flared pants fit the hourglass body very well as the compliments and balances your curvy silhouette. However, you may want to avoid low-cut pants as they tend to make your hips look bigger or unproportionate.
