How To Measure Your Body To Determine Your Body Type

Updated: Oct 8, 2021

Understanding your body type is really important to know what styles flatter you most. This also helps when choosing your sizes while shopping, don’t underestimate the difference the right size makes. In order to have a clearer understanding of your body type, you can take your body measurements. First things first, you will need to wear a form-fitting and matching colour top and bottom to get accurate measurements. Now, all you need is your measuring tape, a pen, and paper!

Women:

To determine your body type, you will need to take measurements of your shoulders, bust, waist, and hips. Remember that the tape should be parallel to the floor and not press on your body too tight or too loose.

Shoulder

  • Stand straight in front of a full-length mirror and bring the measuring tape from one shoulder tip to the other.

Bust

  • Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest and straight across your back.

Waist

  • First, you have to find your natural waist. This is the slimmest part of your torso and is usually located 2 to 3 inches above your belly button. With a relaxed posture, wrap the tape around your natural waist.

Hips

  • With your feet together, wrap the tape over the widest part of your glutes. Make sure your tape is leveled.

Men:

The measuring techniques of a man's body are not much different from females.

Neck

  • Measure loosely around the base of your neck, where it connects to your shoulders. This measurement is important for your shirt collars.

Shoulders

  • Stand straight and relax your shoulders. Measuring from the back, run the tape across one shoulder tip to another, these are the points above your armpits.

Chest

  • Wrap the measuring tape underneath the armpits and bring it around the widest point of the chest and shoulder blades. Again, make sure the tape is parallel to the floor.

Waist

  • Find your natural waist, which sits above your belly button, and measure around the narrowest point of your waist.

Hips

  • Wrap the tape around the widest part of your hips and glutes.

Now that you know your body measurements, you can easily determine your body type and know what type of clothes you want to look for. When doing some online shopping, you can have a look at the site's sizing guide and double-check your measurements in order to avoid making wrong purchases.
